We left Eugene Oregon yesterday (3.22.10) after spending 2 days with Rachael. We had a great time seeing the beautiful Oregon coast, touring the Sea Lion caves and walking through the University of Oregon campus. Rachael showed us all the hot spots and made sure we were well fed!! After leaving OR we drove through Washington state into Canada late in the afternoon. We had a 2 hour hold up at customs - they made us empty the trailer which made us both extremely happy after driving about 400 miles, (thanks Marcia you may have jinxed us-just kidding). Regardless we had 3 rifles and 1 handgun that we had to dig out and fill out paper work for before we could get into Canada...we had to surrender our 'handgun' which was supposed to be my bear repellent in Alaska! We stayed in Abbottsford British Columbia last night and had a nice dinner and wine after a very long day!
Today (Tuesday) 3.23.10 we are in BC Canada - just passed through "Hell's Gate" which doesn't look like Hell to me - it's beautiful, there are gigantic snow covered mountains, tunnels, rivers, trains, trees and we are currently on a very very winding highway with pretty steep drop offs (on Dave's side thank god!) Elevation 10,800 feet! We are on the Trans Canada 1 Highway driving through the Canadian Rockies right now. There are signs stating that pretty much everything we pass is closed. There are warning signs about Avalanches and notices to 'use chains' - not very comforting but so far so good its 63 degrees. Just passed a sign to watch out for “Big Horn Sheep” on the road…sure enough there were! There is a lot of construction through the mountains so every few miles we have to stop and wait which is okay because the scenery is incredible. Small little towns sprout up every so often but mainly mountains are surrounding us for as far as we can see. We just passed a cowboy on horseback with his rifle!
We have about 2500 more miles to go...I have a feeling these are going to be the toughest ones. We miss you guys! Here are a few more pics from the past couple days in Oregon plus a few from today…including the wild sheep! - more to follow soon. Heidi & Dave
